OBITUARY CHARLES PHILIPPE LEBLOND M.D., Ph.D., D.Sc. Professor of Medicine, McGill University (1946 - 1991) Chairman, Dept. of Anatomy, McGill University (1957 - 1974) Companion of the Order of Canada Officier de L'Ordre National du Quebec At his residence in Montreal, surrounded by his loving family, Dr. Charles P. Leblond passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 10, 2007, at the age of ninety-seven. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 64 years, Gertrude (in December 2000), and by his cherished second wife, Odette (in July 2004). He leaves to mourn his sons Philippe, Paul, Pierre, and his daughter Marie-Pascale, all from Montreal, and his devoted grandchildren Katrin and Nicolas, Jean-Christophe, Simon and Emma, Sabrina and Jacques, as well as many family members and friends. He is also survived by his brother Jean-Marie Leblond and family. Author of more than 430 scientific articles, Dr. Leblond has been awarded many honours including membership in the Royal Society, London (1965) and in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1970), and received honorary doctorates from Acadia University (1972), McGill (1982), l'Universite de Montreal (1985), York University (1986) and l'Universite de Sherbrooke (1988). Resting at Collins, Clarke Funeral Directors, 5610 Sherbrooke West, where visitation will take place on Saturday, April 14 and Sunday, April 15 from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral service in St. Leon de Westmount Church, 4311 de Maisonneuve West on Monday, April 16, 2007 at 11 a.m. Memorial service at 4 p.m. at Sainte-Lucie Church, Sainte-Lucie-des-Laurentides, Quebec. RUBIN, Helen Claire (Levy)
Helen Claire (Levy) Rubin, of Manchester, wife of the late Leon A. Rubin, passed away on Saturday (April 12, 2008). Born on May 11, 1919 in New Haven, daughter of the late Dr. Daniel F. and Missy (Still) Levy, she grew up in New Haven and moved to Manchester over 60 years ago. She was a graduate of the Hillhouse High School, New Haven and she attended Smith College, and the Yale Academy of Fine Arts. In 1940 Helen married Howard Comen of New Haven, who was killed in World War II. In 1947 Helen married Leon Rubin of Hartford. They settled in Manchester, where Helen lived until 2007. She had a lifelong love of literature, poetry, music, theater and other fine arts. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and was fascinated by the etymology and the usage of words. She and her late husband Leon enjoyed traveling. They were charter members of the Ellington Ridge Country Club and both were enthusiastic golfers. Helen was a longtime volunteer at Manchester Memorial Hospital, the American Red Cross, Planned Parenthood and many other organizations. She will be dearly missed by her three beloved daughters, Carole Gillis and her husband, Kjell Ersarve of Lund, Sweden, Leslie Haemer and her husband, Robert of Alexandria, VA, and Joyce ``Bobbie'' Deschamps and her husband, Thomas of Vernon; five grandchildren, David, Daniella, Daniel, Laura and Diana; and her devoted sister and lifelong best friend, Joy Palten of West Hartford. In addition, she will be missed by her loving niece, Judy Baskin of Columbia; and many other relatives and a large circle of friends, especially Caryl Spicher, Stacy Bidwell, Luanna Minor and Joanna Davis.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, April 16 at 11 a.m. at the Temple Beth Sholom Memorial Park, Autumn Street, Manchester. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the Rockville General Hospital Hospice Unit, c/o ECHN Community Healthcare Foundation Inc., 71 Haynes Street, Manchester, CT 06040. PALTEN, Paul M.
Paul M. Palten, 89, of Cliffmore Road, West Hartford, died Wednesday (April 25, 2001). Born in Hartford, he was the son of the late Harry and Sylvia (Kotick) Palten. He graduated from Brown University in 1933 and Harvard Law School in 1937. He had been a practicing attorney for nearly 60 years. He was a clerk of City Court of Hartford; a prosecutor for the Court of Common Pleas; the petitioners representative of the Bureau of Support Superior Court; and also the administrative secretary of the Sentence Review Board of the Superior Court; as well as a member of the Hartford County Bar Association, Connecticut Bar Association and the American Bar Association. He was an Army Air Corp Veteran of World War II. He was also a member of Congregation Beth Israel, West Hartford. He leaves his wife, Joy (Levy) Palten; a son, David Palten and his wife, Barbara of West Hartford; and a daughter, Kathy Yacavone and her husband, John of Cheshire; five grandchildren, Daniel and Peter Yacavone, James, Elizabeth and Emily Palten. He was predeceased by his son, Richard. Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 29, 10 a.m. in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Avenue, Hartford, with interment in the Emanuel Synagogue Cemetery, Wethersfield. A memorial period will be held at his home through Tuesday. I wouldn't bet my house on it, but the evidence points to Mendel and Emanuel being the same person.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. today in Temple Beth Emunah in Brockton for Irving Kischel of Hyde Park, cantor of Temple Shalom in Milton from its founding in 1950 until his retirement in 1984.

Cantor Kischel died of a heart attack Sunday in Milton Hospital. He was 73.

Before joining the Milton synagogue, he served three other Orthodox congregations, Young Israel in the Bronx in the late 1930s, Young Israel in Worcester in 1940-41 and Young Israel in Mattapan from 1942 to 1950.

Born in the Lower East Side of New York, where he sang in temple choirs in his youth, Cantor Kischel studied at Elchonon Yeshiva in New York.

He was a past chairman of New England Region of Cantors Assembly, a member of Zerubbabel Lodge of Masons, a director of the National Youth Commission of United Synagogues of America and a volunteer teacher of mentally retarded boys preparing for their bar mitzva.

He leaves his wife, Evelyn (Licker); a son, Aaron L. of Sharon; a daughter, Ellen Seserman of Stoughton; a brother, Jack of New London, Conn.; a sister, Evelyn Lewis of Lindenhurst, N.Y.; and five grandsons.

Rabbi David Werb of Temple Beth Emunah and Hazzan Gerhard Gluck will officiate at the funeral. Burial will be in Sharon Memorial Park.
